From the Shakespearean drama of Tchaikovsky's symphonic fantasy The Tempest to the powerful seascapes of Britten's Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, the sea emerges as a place of emotional depth and theatrical intensity. With Sibelius's The Oceanides—as ethereal as the sea nymphs of Greek mythology—and Debussy's revolutionary La Mer, water is transformed into sound, light and movement through an ever-changing play of orchestral colour and shimmering reflections. Jac van Steen returns to the Orchestra's podium for a programme that spans eras and musical languages, united by a shared vision of nature as a powerful and vividly evocative sonic experience.
