Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano is among the protagonists of Europasinfonie, an ambitious European project uniting twelve orchestras and choirs from across the continent in a single, extraordinary musical experience. In preparation for the major event on June 18, 2027, an international composition competition is underway, inviting artists from across Europe to explore a new frontier of musical creation.
Under the motto "Twelve Countries. One Orchestra", Europasinfonie represents a unique global experiment: for the first time, ensembles distributed across different countries will be connected in real time thanks to ultra-low-latency digital technologies, creating a shared performance beyond geographical borders. A large string orchestra will be present live in the hall, while the other orchestral and choral sections will interact remotely, projected on LED screens.
At the heart of the project, supported by the European Commission's Creative Europe program, is the international composition competition, officially open from May 2 to July 31, 2026. The call is open to composers from European Union countries and other eligible European countries, who are asked to imagine new works capable of engaging with the specificities of a distributed online performance, where even latency becomes a creative element.
An international jury will select three composers, awarding three commissions of € 14,000 each: two for orchestral works and one for orchestra and choir. The winners will have the opportunity to develop a 15–20-minute composition that will be performed at the final concert in Dresden in 2027. Special attention is given to young artists: at least one of the commissions will be awarded to a composer under 35.
“
Through the Europasinfonie project, musicians and composers will be able to explore new avenues for pan-European collaboration. I'm curious to see how composers creatively address the challenges of real-time broadcasting
”
says Markus Rindt, Artistic Director of the Dresdner Sinfoniker.
The project sees Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano among its artistic partners, along with major European institutions, including the Dresden Sinfoniker (Germany), the Brussels Philharmonic (Belgium), the Athens State Orchestra (Greece), and many other orchestras and choirs across the continent.
With Europasinfonie, symphonic music opens up to new modes of production and enjoyment, becoming a symbol of cooperation, innovation, and a shared European identity.
