Caterina Piva

The mezzo-soprano Caterina Piva began her artistic training by taking an interest in drama at a young age: in 2009 she obtained a diploma in acting from the Teatro Carcano in Milan and, in 2017, a diploma in opera singing from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in the same city.
After placing in several international competitions, she won the ‘Emerging Voices’ category at the 69th edition of the As.Li.Co. Competition. She attended the two-year advanced training course at La Scala, where she made her debut as Annina in La traviata in Liliana Cavani’s historic production, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung and Marco Armiliato. This was followed by La Ciesca in Woody Allen’s Gianni Schicchi, directed by Adam Fischer, and Maddalena in another historic production of Rigoletto, staged by Gilbert Deflo and directed by Daniel Oren. At the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, she successfully performed the roles of Fenena (Nabucco), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Meg (Falstaff), Nikona (Siberia), Emilia (Otello) and Flora (La traviata), under the baton of conductors of the calibre of Zubin Mehta, John Eliot Gardiner, Gianandrea Noseda, Riccardo Frizza and Paolo Carignani, and under the direction of stage directors such as Sven-Eric Bechtolf, Davide Livermore, Leo Muscato, Valerio Binasco and Roberto Andò. She made her debut as Lucilla in Rossini’s La scala di seta at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona. She also took on the role of Maddalena at the Teatro Carlo Felice, conducted by Jordi Bernacer. In the summer of 2022, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in Puccini’s Trittico, staged by Christof Loy and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, playing the roles of La Ciesca and La Maestra delle novizie. He plays Dimitri in La Scala’s new production of Fedora, staged by Mario Martone and conducted by Marco Armiliato, and makes his debut as Prinz Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, conducted by Fabio Luisi. In 2023, at the Royal Opera House in Muscat, he takes on the role of Cherubino in Giorgio Strehler’s historic production of Le nozze di Figaro, conducted by Sesto Quatrini; he plays Smeton at the Teatro San Carlo in the production of Anna Bolena directed by Jetske Mijnnsen and conducted by Riccardo Frizza.

She returns to the Salzburg Festival as Lady Macbeth’s Lady in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s new production, conducted by Philippe Jordan. At the Verdi Festival in Parma, she plays Fenena under the baton of Giampaolo Bisanti, and at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, she makes her debut in the role of Charlotte (Werther) conducted by Donato Renzetti, as well as in the role of Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) conducted by Fabio Luisi.
In recent seasons, she has sung Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Roméo et Juliette at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples; she made her debut in the role of Aristea (L’Olimpiade) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées under the baton of Jean-Christophe Spinosi and directed by Emmanuel Daumas; she took on the role of Preziosilla in La forza del destino at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, that of Bradamante in Alcina at the Rome Opera, and that of Carmen at the Teatro Carlo Felice. She then made her debut at the Las Palmas Opera as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. In concert, she sang Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona conducted by Roberto Abbado, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Orchestra Sinfoncia di Milano, the Messa per Rossini at the Rossini Opera Festival, and Verdi’s Requiem with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.
She recently performed the role of Meg in Falstaff at the Verdi Festival in Parma and at the Teatro di San Carlo, and Carmen at the theatres in Treviso, Padua and Rovigo. In concert, she sang Verdi’s Requiem with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo.
Among her upcoming engagements are Carmen at the Semperoper in Dresden and Werther at the Teatro di San Carlo.
