Daniel Müller-Schott

German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott is recognized as one of the leading instrumentalists of his generation, performing on the world’s foremost stages with major orchestras and conductors. Described by The New York Times for his “intensive expressiveness” and “fearless technique,” he is celebrated for his artistry that bridges music, literature, and the visual arts.

Highlights of the 2026/27 season include concerts with the Orchestre National de France under Cristian Măcelaru, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester under Andris Poga, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner, as well as the season opening of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano at Teatro alla Scala under Marko Letonja. Further engagements also include performances with the Prague Philharmonia under Emmanuel Villaume, the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra under Kerem Hasan, the Sevilla Symphony Orchestra under Eun Sun Kim, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko and the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini under Kent Nagano, among the others. In June 2027, he will serve as Chairman of the Jury of the inaugural Danish International Cello Competition. The Vevey Spring Classic Festival, which Daniel Müller-Schott founded together with conductor Wilson Hermanto, will enter its 6th edition in 2027, celebrating the 150th birthday of Pablo Casals and Müller-Schott’s 50th birthday. Müller-Schott has appeared with many of the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Munich Philharmonic, Bavarian State Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Oslo Philharmonic, London Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic, as well as major ensembles across North America, Asia, and Australia. 
He collaborates with conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, Vasily Petrenko, Krzysztof Urbański, and Marin Alsop, among many others. With great passion, Daniel Müller-Schott not only performs the great cello concertos from the Baroque to the modern era. His wide-ranging repertoire spans from the Baroque to contemporary works, with the discovery of unknown works, his own arrangements, and collaborations with composers of our time playing an important role. George Alexander Albrecht, Peter Ruzicka and Sir André Previn have dedicated cello concertos to him. 
Daniel Müller-Schott is regularly invited to international music festivals. In his chamber music concerts, he works with artists including Kit Armstrong, Renaud Capuçon, Veronika Eberle, Julia Fischer, Janine Jansen, Nils Mönkemeyer, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Francesco Piemontesi, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Simon Trpčeski and with the Modigliani, Aris and Ebène Quartets, among others. 

Over the past three decades, Müller-Schott has released more than thirty acclaimed recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, Warner, Pentatone, and Orfeo, earning distinctions such as the Diapason d’Or, Gramophone Editor’s Choice, BBC Music Magazine’s “CD of the Month” and the International Classical Music Award (ICMA). His recent ORFEO release, Echoes of My Childhood, features works by Boccherini, Geminiani, Vivaldi and Bach and was named Gramophone Editor’s Choice in August 2026. A student of Walter Nothas, Heinrich Schiff, and Steven Isserlis, he also received guidance from Anne-Sophie Mutter and Mstislav Rostropovich. Winner of the 1992 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow. Since 2006, Daniel Müller-Schott makes music on his “Ex Shapiro” Matteo Goffriller cello, made in Venice in 1727. Additionally, he plays instruments by Gaetano Rossi (Milan, 1845) and a modern cello by Dietmar Rexhausen (Schliersee, 2022).
