During the 2023/24–2025/26 seasons, Julius Zeman held a position as conductor at the Saarländisches Staatstheater, where he developed a wide-ranging repertoire including Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, and Kálmán’s The Duchess of Chicago. He already caused a sensation in his first season with a last-minute stand-in performance for Verdi’s Aida. The premiere of Holst’s Savitri and Schoenberg’s Erwartung attracted great attention from audiences and the press (FAZ: “A modern opera highlight!”). Julius Zeman has appeared as a guest conductor with Bock’s Anatevka at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg and the Theater im Pfalzbau, and with Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Bern Opera.
From the outset of his career, Julius Zeman has focused on creating innovative programs that combine artistic vision with musical education. Through conversational concerts, he builds a close connection with his audience and creates space for shared musical experiences.
He performs regularly as a song accompanist and chamber musician with leading artists, including appearances at Mozart Week in Salzburg with Emmanuel Tjeknavorian (Violin) on Mozart’s original fortepiano. As an organist, he has given recent solo recitals at Salzburg Cathedral and the Basilica of Sonntagberg. Together with Shun Oi, he recorded the first-ever version of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in its original version for two pianos (ARS Produktion).
While still a student, he worked as assistant conductor to Leo Hussain at the Theater an der Wien—where he also served as a production manager—and to Leopold Hager, collaborating closely with him as a harpsichordist, organist, and pianist.
His essays on cultural studies and music analysis have been published in the Freiburger Universitätsblätter and the Literarischer Zaunkönig.
Julius Zeman is a Bösendorfer Artist.
