Levy Sekgapane

In his young career, Levy Sekgapane has already developed two signature roles: Il Conte Almaviva in Il BARBIEREDI SIVIGLIA, which he sang in a new production at Glyndebourne Opera Festival, at Opéra national de Paris, at Vienna State Opera, at German Opera Berlin and Opéra national de Bordeaux. On the other hand, Don Ramiro in LA CENERENTOLA, which he performed in productions at Munich State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Los Angeles Opera and at Opera Zürich, where he shared the stage with Cecilia Bartoli.
Levy Sekgapane opens the 2024/25 season with his return to La Monnaie in Brussels to sing Jonah in TIME OF OUR SINGING. In Madrid he will sing Händels MESSIAH, at Liceu Barcelona Mozarts REQUIEM and with the title role of MITRIDATE he will give his house and role debut at Opéra Montpellier. At Opéra national de Paris he will sing Il Conte Almaviva in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, before he returns to Théâtre des Champs-Elysees for Lindoro in L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI.
In the last seasons, he debuted several new roles, like I PURITANI at Théâtre des Champs-Elysees, OTELLO (Rossini) at Frankfurt Opera, LA SONNAMBULA in Munich and LES PECHEURSDE PERLES at Cape Town Opera. Other highlights of his young career include his debut at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg singing the first New-Year’s-Eve-Gala concert ever with Olga Peretyatko under the baton of James Conlon. He sang ADINA at Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, ENRICO DI BORGOGNA at Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, IDOMENEO at Salzburg Festival and L’ELISIRD’AMORE during the Whitsun Festival at State Theatre Wiesbaden.
Born in Kroonstad, South Africa, Levy Sekgapane studied under Kamal Khan and Hanna van Niekerk at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town and joined the Young Ensemble at Semperoper Dresden afterwards. Levy is 1st prize winner of the International Belvedere singing competition (2015), of the Monserrat Caballé singing competition (2015)and of Placido Domingo’s OPERALIA (2017). In 2019, his first solo CD with Rossini arias was released by Prima Classic – recorded with the Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti.
