Between 1980 and 1988 he served as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Asturias Symphony Orchestra and, from 1986 to 2005, of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, a group that under his guidance quickly established itself as an essential point of reference in the Spanish symphonic scene.
In 1993 he took over the direction of the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until August 2013.
From 2013 to 2021 he was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestra and Choir of the Community of Madrid.
He has collaborated regularly with the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and with numerous international festivals including those of the Canary Islands, Peralada, Granada, Santander, Schleswig-Holstein, the Rossini Opera Festival and the Quincena Musical in San Sebastián.
In addition to having conducted almost all the Spanish orchestras, he has been invited to conduct prestigious international groups such as the HR-Sinfonieorchester of Frankfurt, the Berliner Symphoniker, the Münchner Symphoniker, the Dresdner Sinfoniker, the Royal Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia of Rome, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orquestra Gulbenkian of Lisbon and the Orchestra Filarmonica “Toscanini” of Parma. He was invited by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) to conduct, as part of the Day of Music, the project 9 Novenas (Mahler, Bruckner, Beethoven, Schubert, Šostakovič, Dvořák, Mozart, Haydn and Garay), which saw the five resident orchestras in Madrid (ONE, ORTVE, OSM, ORCAM and JONDE) as protagonists in a single day, achieving unanimous and resounding success.
