The Breath of Song - Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano

IL RESPIRO DEL CANTO

Respiro del Canto is a series of singing and vocal sessions designed as an experience of well-being, listening, and participation. It is supported by the Municipio 5 as part of the service contract for the implementation of initiatives in the parks (June 21 – October 12, 2025).
The activities, led by Maestro Maria Teresa Tramontin, will take place between September and October 2025 in the Municipio 5 parks and are open to the public.
The project focuses on the profound connection between voice, nature, and well-being, proposing singing not only as a musical practice, but as a tool for awareness, connection, and healing. In a natural and accessible context like the park, the voice becomes a means of connecting with oneself, with others, and with the environment.
The project stems from an idea as fascinating as it is concrete: singing, in its most ancient origins, is intimately intertwined with the sounds of the natural environment. The earliest forms of human vocality can be interpreted as imitations and reworkings of the sounds of nature—birdsong, water, the wind in the trees—and as a true protolanguage, capable of conveying emotions and sustaining relationships within a group.
Even simple vocal sounds, such as humming or vocalizations, take on different meanings depending on the context: call, alert, gathering, relationship, cooperation. In this sense, the voice is not only an artistic medium, but a primary human device for connecting with oneself and others.
Within this framework, choral singing and shared vocal practices become a precious opportunity for socialization. Singing together helps reduce isolation and loneliness, stimulates learning, and combats cultural poverty and the decline of cognitive abilities. Group work also fosters the development of fundamental relational skills—listening, tolerance, mutual respect—which are cultivated through direct experience.
These aspects are accompanied by a clear dimension of physical and psychological well-being. Singing is associated with benefits such as improved oxygenation, reduced stress, and greater openness to relationships. In the Il Respiro del Canto project, these effects are amplified thanks to the natural context: listening to the environment, the rhythm of walking, the quality of the air, and the sounds of the landscape become an integral part of the experience, promoting relaxation, attention, and presence.

Activities differentiated by age
The activities are designed with specific care for the different groups of participants, so as to make the experience accessible, inclusive and engaging.

For children
The program for the littlest ones is designed as a playful and sensorial exploration. It begins with a blindfolded sound walk, where listening replaces sight and attention focuses on the direction, distance, intensity, and timbre of sounds.
Children are then invited to describe and reproduce what they have perceived, transforming listening into creative expression. This is followed by games that connect sounds and colors, work on contrasts between "high" and "low" sounds through body movement, and moments of vocal dialogue linked to emotions. The program concludes with shared singing, in which voice and body become tools for play and connection.

For adults
The program for adults is designed as an immersive experience in nature, guided by breath. It begins with a relaxation session accompanied by the sound of a Tibetan singing bowl and wind chimes, to foster presence and listening.
The work continues with breathing exercises linked to vocal emission, allowing the voice to emerge naturally and unforced. Body and voice are then connected, observing how posture influences sound and how sound modifies the body's perception. The experience concludes with a moment of shared singing, using an African chant, as a final gesture of unity, rhythm, and community.

Respiro del Canto offers a simple yet powerful practice: reclaiming the voice as a space for listening, connection, and well-being, in a context—the park—that makes the experience immediate, welcoming, and participatory.
An invitation to rediscover, through breath and sound, a different way of being together and inhabiting the landscape, with music as a bridge between body, nature, and community.
