Energy efficiency improvements and renovation of the Milan Auditorium - Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano

Energy efficiency upgrade and renovation
of the Milan Auditorium

Project context and objectives
The Milan Auditorium has long been a hub of culture, social interaction, and personal growth. Following the years marked by the pandemic—during which audiences experienced isolation and uncertainty—it became essential to provide the city with a space that is safe, innovative, and sustainability-oriented.

To this end, the Milan Symphony Orchestra Foundation—supported by the Government and the Culture Fund via the Institute for Sports Credit—launched a major project in 2021 aimed at:
  • improve the energy efficiency of the hall and the systems;
  • upgrade infrastructure to the highest standards of safety and sanitization;
  • implement state-of-the-art systems to ensure air quality, comfort, and sustainability;
  • reduce environmental impact and move closer to the Agenda 2030 goals.
The project falls within the framework of the Next Generation EU European funding programme.

The new air conditioning and air treatment system
The main intervention involved the renewal of the air conditioning systems, designed to ensure:
  • Greater safety and air quality
    • Systems equipped with automatic sanitization processes: they reduce bacteria, germs, and viruses throughout the theater.
    • Technology designed to provide air that is always fresh, sanitized, and comfortable, ensuring a pleasant environment for the audience, artists, and staff.
  • Energy efficiency and sustainability
    • New systems that enable the optimized use of energy resources.
    • Reduction of energy consumption and emissions, thanks to modern, high-performance systems designed for integration with renewable energy sources.
  • Improved performance
    • Ability to maintain optimal environmental conditions even when the rooms are completely full.
    • Energy autonomy increased to 70%, without the need to introduce outside air for the majority of the season, except for regulatory reasons.
Further structural interventions
In addition to air conditioning, the project involved:
  • Renovation of the Auditorium façade
  • an aesthetic and functional intervention that enhanced the architectural identity of the hall.
  • Overall energy efficiency upgrade of the facility
    using materials and technologies in line with the most modern energy-saving standards.
  • Improvement of security and reception systems
    with a focus on occupant comfort, the usability of spaces, and compliance with the latest regulations.

Objectives achieved
Thanks to the project funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, the Auditorium is now:
  • safer, thanks to advanced air sanitization and control systems;
  • more sustainable, with a concrete reduction in energy and environmental impact;
  • more efficient, thanks to modern and technologically advanced facilities
  • more welcoming, offering the public a comfortable and protected experience;
  • in line with the goals of Agenda 2030.
The initiative reached full fruition during 2022, bringing lasting benefits to the community, the artists, and the city of Milan.

The cultural value of the project
The renovation of the Auditorium is not merely a technical undertaking, but an investment in culture and the community.
Improving the spaces where music is born and comes to life means:
  • encourage the return of the audience after a challenging period;
  • make the musical experience more enjoyable, safe, and contemporary;
  • ensure continuity for the Foundation’s mission: making music a shared asset that is accessible and capable of generating social value.

NEW INSTRUMENTS, NEW SEASON, NEW ENERGY

Two years ago, our community achieved something extraordinary: raising over €55,000 in just 30 days to provide the Orchestra with a new set of timpani. Today, with the 2026/27 Season approaching, we are aiming for a new goal: to raise €30,000 to renew the Orchestra’s percussion instruments and continue ensuring the artistic excellence of our concerts.
