For Lutherans, God always observes the conscience of all men, there is no escape. The Reformation places a strong emphasis on the intimate connotation of faith. There is no need for any priest to speak with God, there is the so-called "universal priesthood", and everyone can come to terms with their sins, in the name of the principle of the "free inquiry". It is an introjection of the concept of faith, which goes hand in hand with a general trend of Modernity, from Descartes to Montaigne, through Luther: that of returning to the subject and to the dignity of his feeling and thought.
It is inevitable that a page so deeply imbued with Protestantism as Brahms' Deutsches Requiem differs so much from Rossini's Stabat Mater, proposed for last Easter, and presents a marked intimate, contemplative, meditative nature. With this concert, Music Director Emmanuel Tjeknavorian invites us to hold our consciences in an intimate meditation around music of exceptional workmanship.
