Giuseppe Verdi’s three most celebrated operas — Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata — take center stage in a special project at the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, made possible thanks to the extraordinary contribution of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
From October 29 to November 9, 2025, the so-called Popular Trilogy will complete the 2024/25 Opera Season of the Fondazione Teatri di Piacenza, in a new production conceived as a single narrative and musical journey.
The musical direction of all three titles is entrusted to Francesco Lanzillotta, while the stage direction and the dramaturgical concept bear the signature of Roberto Catalano.
The production features a single stage design, characterized by recurring elements reinterpreted across the three operas, with sets by Mariana Moreira, costumes by Veronica Pattuelli, and lighting by Silvia Vacca.
The cast brings together outstanding Verdi interpreters such as Francesco Meli (Duke of Mantua, Manrico, Alfredo Germont), Luca Salsi (Rigoletto, Count di Luna, Giorgio Germont in the first three performances), Maria Novella Malfatti (Gilda, Leonora, Violetta Valéry), Ernesto Petti, Teresa Romano, Adolfo Corrado, Irene Savignano, alongside a selection of young Italian voices chosen especially for this production.
The operas will be performed one after another over the course of a single week:
Rigoletto — Wednesday, October 29 and Wednesday, November 5
Il trovatore — Friday, October 31 and Friday, November 7
La traviata — Sunday, November 2 and Sunday, November 9, 2025.
The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano will provide the musical performance, marking the beginning of a new collaboration with the Fondazione Teatri di Piacenza. The Chorus of the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, prepared by Corrado Casati, will take part in all three productions, further reinforcing the project’s overall unity.
It is a great honor for our Foundation to take part in this project promoted by the Fondazione Teatri di Piacenza,” states Ambra Redaelli, President of the Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.
“We are delighted to bring our experience as a major symphony orchestra to the operatic world, approaching Verdi’s Popular Trilogy with the same rigor and passion that we devote to the symphonic repertoire.
This project, born in collaboration with such a prestigious institution as the Fondazione Teatri di Piacenza, once again highlights the importance of building synergies across the territory — one of the core values of our Foundation”.
